TAI CHI

Description
Tai chi chuan is an internal Chinese martial art, and is sometimes translated as “Grand Ultimate”. Tai chi is typically practiced for a variety of reasons including its soft martial techniques, health and longevity. The forms when done correctly moves the Chi (vital or bio energy) up and down the entire body from the head to the feet.  Benefits include reduced stress and increased feeling of well-being, improved balance and coordination. Promotes patience and concentration. Strengthens muscles and improves Circulation. Helps with arthritis, aches and pains.  Reduces anxiety and depression.

Tai Chi Chuan includes empty-hand forms, as well as forms with weapons (e.g. sword/sabre) as well as push hands (a training routine to practice tai chi chuan using sensitivity, timing, coordination and positioning).

History
Legend has it that Tai Chi origins began with Chang Sang Feng sometime around the 1300’s AD., where he witnessed a fight between a magpie and a snake. Despite vicious attacks from the magpie with wings, claws and beak, the snake dodged every attack and gracefully moved out of the way.  Throughout the fight the snake kept calm but defensive.  This taught Chang Sang Feng the importance of calmness and softness. Using circular movements of the snake and principles of Yin and Yang he created the beginnings of what we know as Tai Chi Chuan today.

The style taught here at KombatArts is the Yang Style with traceable lineage back to founder through the famous Grand Master Tung Ying Chieh (1898-1961).

Class Format
The class begins with doing a light warm up to loosen tight muscles and increase circulation; followed by practicing the Yang Style Long Form Slow Set. Once the student has learned the Yang Style Long Form Slow set, the student can then move on in learning push hands and weapon forms.

Attire
Comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement, as well as light, thin flat-soled shoes.
